November is a wonderful time to pause and reconnect before the bustle of the holidays begins. This week, we encourage you to look upward and engage in a simple, beautiful tradition with your child: observation.

The Magic of the Beaver Moon

Historically, the full moon in November is often called the "Beaver Moon," named for the time beavers finish their preparations for winter. This natural marker is a perfect starting point for discussions with your child about the changing seasons, animal habits, and the cosmos.

Montessori Connection: Observation is the cornerstone of the Montessori method. When a child observes the world around them—the moon in the sky, a leaf falling, a beaver dam—they are gathering concrete information that builds their foundational knowledge of science and the universe.

Simple Family Ritual: Reading Together

One of the most powerful things you can do for your child's development is to dedicate time to reading together. This simple ritual does more than just build literacy; it creates an intimate, predictable moment of connection that supports emotional regulation and bonding.

  • Make it Intentional: Put phones away and choose a cozy spot. Even fifteen minutes a day makes a huge difference.

  • Ask Open-Ended Questions: Instead of just summarizing the plot, ask: "How do you think that character is feeling?" or "What do you notice in the picture?" This fosters critical thinking and emotional literacy.

  • Choose Diverse Books: Look for stories that reflect your child's world but also expose them to different cultures, experiences, and historical perspectives.

This week, step outside, look for the moon, and then snuggle up with a great book. These moments of quiet presence are truly priceless.
